Top Reasons Cars Fail Inspection in UAE

No used car is perfect. Every vehicle that comes through an AutoFay inspection has findings — the question is whether those findings are normal wear, manageable issues, or serious problems that should change your buying decision. After thousands of inspections across the UAE, clear patterns emerge in what inspectors find most frequently.

Undisclosed Paint Work

The single most common finding is paint that is not original. Sellers frequently do not disclose — or genuinely do not know about — previous paint work. AutoFay's panel-by-panel assessment rates each surface as Original, Repainted, or Total Repainted. Finding one or two repainted panels from minor parking incidents is common and generally acceptable on any used car. Finding four or more repainted panels, especially on the same side of the car, indicates a significant incident that the seller should have disclosed.

The concern with undisclosed paint is not the paint itself — it is what the paint is hiding. Repainted panels sometimes cover poorly repaired dents, filler material, or rust. When combined with frame inspection findings showing repaired structural components, extensive paint work becomes a red-level finding.

Frame and Structural Repairs

Frame damage findings are less common than paint issues but far more serious. When the inspection reveals frame rails rated as Frame Repaired, front aprons rated as Welded, or pillars rated as Replaced, the car has been in a significant accident and undergone structural repair. These findings are deal-breakers for many buyers because frame repairs permanently compromise the vehicle's crash protection and can cause alignment and handling issues that worsen over time.

Worn Brakes Sold as Fine

Brake pads rated under 25% — the Worn category — appear frequently on cars presented as being in excellent condition. Sellers often do not check or do not disclose brake wear because the car still stops adequately during a test drive. But brake pads under 25% need replacement soon, and the cost of new pads and potentially rotors should factor into the purchase price. Front brake pads tend to wear faster than rear in UAE due to the heavy braking patterns in city driving.

AC Performance Below Standard

In the UAE, an AC system that blows Cool instead of Very Cold is a common inspection finding. The car still has cold air, so the seller considers the AC working. But in July, Cool is not enough — the interior will not reach comfortable temperature in traffic. Common causes include low refrigerant from slow leaks, a compressor that is weakening, or a condenser clogged with sand and debris. Blend door actuators clicking behind the dashboard is another frequent finding.

Stored OBD Fault Codes

Many cars arrive at inspection with recently cleared diagnostic codes — the readiness monitors show Not Ready, indicating a recent reset. When the scanner finds stored codes despite a recent clearing, or when active faults appear, these are significant findings. Common codes in UAE include evaporative emission system faults from extreme heat, transmission temperature codes from summer driving, and AC-related system codes.

Tire Age Beyond Safe Limits

Tires that look fine but are manufactured more than four years ago appear regularly. The rubber has hardened from UV exposure and heat cycling, reducing grip significantly — especially in wet conditions during the brief UAE rain season. Sellers and even some dealers do not check or disclose tire age, focusing only on visible tread depth. Our per-wheel inspection records the manufacturing year for each tire.

Fluid Neglect

Transmission fluid rated as Dirty or with Burnt Smell is common on cars over five years old that have not had regular transmission service. Similarly, brake fluid that is Dark rather than Clear indicates it has never been flushed. Engine oil rated Dirty on a car presented as recently serviced raises questions about the claimed service history. These fluid findings do not necessarily mean the car should not be purchased, but they indicate maintenance gaps that may have allowed premature wear on the systems these fluids protect.

Suspension Wear from Speed Bumps

Worn bushings, weakened shock absorbers, and developing play in ball joints are common findings on cars with more than 60,000 km in UAE cities. The frequency of speed bumps accelerates suspension wear beyond what would be expected at the same mileage in other markets. These are yellow-level findings — the car is still safe to drive, but suspension service should be planned and the cost factored into the purchase decision.
