Every inspection section before the road test examines the car at rest — components are tested individually, fluids are checked, and systems are verified. The road test brings everything together. It is the only section where the car is evaluated as a complete, functioning machine under real driving conditions. Problems that hide in a parked car reveal themselves on the road.
Engine Performance and Acceleration
Engine Performance is rated Excellent, Good, Sluggish, or Poor. An engine rated Excellent delivers power smoothly across the RPM range with no hesitation. Sluggish performance — where the engine feels underpowered for its displacement — can indicate clogged fuel injectors, a dirty throttle body, or failing sensors. Acceleration is tested separately as Smooth, Hesitation, Misfiring, or Poor. Hesitation during acceleration, particularly from a standstill or during mid-range passing maneuvers, points to fuel delivery or ignition issues that the OBD scanner may not catch as active faults.
Transmission, Braking, and Steering
Transmission Shifting is evaluated during the drive — Smooth, Hard Shifts, Delayed, or Slipping. The road test adds context that a stationary check cannot: a transmission may shift smoothly when cold but exhibit hard shifts once warmed up, or slip only under load during highway merging. Braking Performance is rated Excellent, Good, Soft, Pulling, or Poor. A car that pulls to one side during braking has a caliper or pad issue on one side. Soft braking feel on the road confirms what a pedal feel test showed in the static check.
Steering Feel is assessed as Precise, Loose, Heavy, or Vibrating. Precise steering responds immediately and predictably to input. Loose steering has dead spots where the wheel moves without affecting direction — worn tie rod ends or steering rack. A vibrating steering wheel at highway speed typically indicates wheel balance issues or warped brake rotors. Heavy steering that does not ease with speed may indicate power steering failure.
Ride, Noise, and Vibrations
Ride Comfort is rated Comfortable, Firm, Bouncy, or Harsh. A bouncy ride points to worn shocks or struts that no longer dampen spring oscillations. A harsh ride could indicate aftermarket lowering springs or worn bushings transmitting every road imperfection into the cabin. Road Noise and Wind Noise are assessed separately — Quiet, Normal, Loud, or Excessive. Excessive road noise suggests worn tires or failed sound deadening. Excessive wind noise points to poor door or window seals.
Vibrations are documented by when they occur — None, At Idle, At Speed, During Braking, or Constant. Vibrations at idle suggest engine or transmission mount problems. Vibrations at speed are typically wheel balance or driveshaft issues. Vibrations during braking indicate warped rotors. Pulling Left or Right is tested — Straight, Slight Pull, or Strong Pull — which reveals alignment issues or uneven brake application.
Specific Systems and Overall Assessment
Unusual Noises are categorized: None, Clicking, Grinding, Squealing, or Knocking. Each noise type points to a specific issue — clicking during turns is CV joints, grinding during braking is metal-on-metal pad contact, squealing is glazed or worn pads, and knocking under load is engine detonation or worn bearings. Cruise Control and Hill Start Assist are tested during the drive. The inspector records the Overall Driving Experience as Excellent, Good, Average, or Poor, along with detailed Road Test Comments that provide context for every finding.
