Vehicle security systems have evolved from simple door locks and basic alarms to sophisticated electronic networks that include keyless entry, smart proximity keys, immobilizers, push-button start, remote start, and connected car features. On a used vehicle, these systems must all function correctly — a malfunctioning immobilizer can prevent the car from starting, a faulty smart key can leave you locked out, and a non-functional alarm provides no protection. AutoFay's inspection covers these systems across multiple inspection categories.
Push-Button Start and Key Recognition
AutoFay's engine start inspection checks push-button start — rated Working, Not Working, or N/A. The push-button start system relies on recognizing the smart key's proximity signal before allowing the engine to start. If the system intermittently fails to recognize the key, the driver may need to hold the key directly against the start button — a workaround that indicates a weak key battery or a failing antenna ring in the steering column.
Remote start is separately tested — Working, Not Working, or N/A. Remote start is particularly valuable in the UAE, allowing owners to cool the cabin before entering the vehicle. A non-functional remote start on a used car might indicate a simple key battery issue, but it could also point to a communication problem between the key fob and the vehicle's body control module. The vehicle starts/stops safely check confirms that the complete starting sequence functions correctly.
Keyless Entry and Smart Key Proximity
AutoFay's power features inspection checks keyless entry — rated Working, Intermittent, Not Working, or N/A. Keyless entry allows locking and unlocking by pressing buttons on the key fob from a distance. Intermittent function suggests a weak battery or range limitations from interference. Smart key/proximity entry is checked separately — rated Working, Not Working, or N/A. Proximity entry detects the key in your pocket or bag and unlocks the door when you touch the handle. This system uses different antenna technology than remote keyless entry and can fail independently.
All door locks are verified through the power door locks check — All Working, Some Not Working, or Not Working. Each door's exterior and interior handles are tested. Child safety locks are checked where applicable. The complete locking system — from smart key proximity through power locks to physical operation — must work as an integrated chain.
Immobilizer and Anti-Theft Systems
The immobilizer is rated Working or Not Working in the safety and security systems inspection. The immobilizer is an electronic system that prevents the engine from starting without the correct transponder chip in the key. A malfunctioning immobilizer can either prevent the car from starting with the correct key (a major inconvenience) or fail to prevent starting without the correct key (a security risk). The OBD scanner can detect immobilizer-related fault codes that indicate system issues.
The anti-theft alarm is rated Working, Not Working, or N/A. The alarm system typically includes door sensors, interior motion sensors, and a tilt sensor. Testing confirms the alarm arms when locked, triggers when a door is opened without disarming, and disarms properly with the key fob. A non-functional alarm on a used car may indicate a disconnected sensor, a dead siren, or an electrical issue that could affect other systems.
Key Count and Spare Key Considerations
While not a specific checkbox on the inspection form, inspectors note key-related observations in the comments fields. A used car sold with only one key raises the question of whether additional keys exist and could be used to access or start the vehicle by someone other than the new owner. Programming a new smart key typically requires dealer-level equipment and can be costly for some brands. Buyers should consider this when evaluating the inspection report.
The key fob's physical condition is observed — cracked housing, worn buttons, or a missing panic button affect daily usability. The key battery condition affects all wireless functions — keyless entry range, proximity detection sensitivity, and remote start capability all diminish as the key battery weakens.
Connected Car and Digital Security
Many modern vehicles offer connected car features through smartphone apps — remote lock/unlock, vehicle location, remote AC start, and maintenance alerts. While these are not directly tested in the physical inspection, the infotainment system check (Working, Glitchy, Cracked, or Not Working) and Bluetooth connectivity test help assess the vehicle's digital infrastructure. Previous owner accounts should be deactivated to prevent unauthorized remote access to the vehicle.
The body control module codes from the OBD scanner may reveal security system errors that are not apparent during physical testing. Stored codes related to the immobilizer, key recognition, or alarm system provide insight into intermittent issues that might not manifest during the inspection but could cause problems for the new owner.
