Glass is one of the most overlooked inspection areas, yet it directly affects safety, visibility, and vehicle value. In the UAE, where thermal stress from extreme heat expansion is a daily reality, a small chip can propagate into a full crack with no warning. AutoFay inspects 9 glass points covering every piece of glass on the vehicle.
Windshield: The Most Critical Glass
The Windshield is rated No Visible Fault, Chipped, Cracked, Needs Replacement, Aftermarket, or Replaced. A chip is a localized impact point — it may be repairable if it is smaller than a coin and not in the driver's direct line of sight. A cracked windshield cannot be repaired and must be replaced. In the UAE, windshield chips from highway driving are common because construction vehicles and sand trucks shed debris. The thermal cycle of hot days and cold AC interiors creates expansion stress that turns chips into cracks.
Aftermarket or Replaced windshields are noted because they affect ADAS calibration. Modern vehicles with forward-facing cameras mounted behind the windshield require precise calibration after windshield replacement. An aftermarket windshield of different thickness or optical quality can affect camera-based systems like automatic emergency braking and lane departure warning.
Side Windows and Rear Window
Each side window is inspected individually — Front Left, Front Right, Rear Left, and Rear Right — rated No Visible Fault, Scratched, Cracked, or Aftermarket. Scratched windows typically result from rolling up windows with sand on the seals, which is common in UAE conditions. An Aftermarket window may indicate a previous break-in or accident. The Rear Window is checked for cracks and whether it is aftermarket. The rear defroster elements embedded in the glass are fragile — a replaced rear window may have non-functional defroster lines.
Mirror Glass and Sunroof
Left and Right Side Mirror Glass are each rated No Visible Fault, Cracked, Missing, or Aftermarket. A cracked mirror glass is a safety hazard because it distorts the reflected image and creates blind spots. Missing mirror glass is a more obvious problem but equally dangerous. Aftermarket mirror glass may lack the original auto-dimming coating or integrated blind spot indicators.
The Sunroof or Moonroof Glass is checked as No Visible Fault, Cracked, Aftermarket, or N/A. Sunroof glass in the UAE endures extraordinary UV and heat exposure. While the glass itself rarely fails, the seals around the sunroof deteriorate from heat cycling. A sunroof that does not seal properly allows water intrusion during car washes or the rare rain event, leading to headliner damage, electrical issues, and musty cabin smell. The drain tubes that channel water away from the sunroof frame can clog with dust and sand, causing water to back up and enter the cabin through unexpected paths.
Glass and UAE Conditions
UAE driving conditions are particularly harsh on glass. Highway speeds mean more stone chip impacts. Sand particles scratch surfaces gradually. UV exposure degrades window tinting film, causing it to bubble, peel, or turn purple. Our inspectors note the overall condition of glass, which helps buyers understand whether glass-related costs are ahead. A car with a chipped windshield, scratched side windows, and a cracked mirror needs glass work that adds up — the inspection ensures buyers know this before committing.
