Door Inspection: Seals, Hinges, and Hidden Water Damage

Door Inspection: Seals, Hinges, and Hidden Water Damage

Doors seem simple — they open, they close. But each door is a complex assembly of hinges, latches, seals, handles, locks, window mechanisms, and trim panels. Wear on these components reveals the car's real usage history, and damaged seals can lead to water intrusion that causes hidden electrical problems and corrosion.

Door Operation: All Four Doors Plus the Trunk

AutoFay checks the operation of each door individually. Front Left, Front Right, Rear Left, and Rear Right Door Operation are each rated No Visible Fault, Stiff, Squeaky, or Not Closing Properly. A stiff door may have a binding hinge or a latch that needs lubrication. A squeaky door has dry hinge pins. A door that does not close properly — requiring a hard slam or not latching on the first attempt — could have a misaligned striker plate, which sometimes indicates previous body repair that was not aligned correctly.

Trunk or Tailgate Operation is checked separately — No Visible Fault, Stiff, or Not Closing Properly. A tailgate on an SUV that requires excessive force to close or does not latch properly may have worn gas struts or a misaligned latch mechanism.

Hinges, Seals, and Handles

Door Hinges are rated No Visible Fault, Worn, Squeaky, or Needs Replacement. Worn hinges allow the door to sag, which causes the door to scrape the frame or not latch properly. Sagging doors also create uneven gaps visible from the outside — a cosmetic and functional concern. Door Rubber Seals are checked as No Visible Fault, Worn, Torn, or Missing. These seals keep water, dust, and wind noise out of the cabin. In the UAE, rubber seals degrade from UV exposure and extreme heat cycling. Torn or missing seals allow sand and moisture to enter the door cavity, leading to rust on inner panels and potential electrical damage to window motors and speaker wiring.

Exterior and Interior Door Handles are tested — All Working, Some Loose, or Some Not Working. A loose exterior handle is annoying; a non-functional one means passengers cannot exit from that door in an emergency. Door Locks are verified as All Working, Some Not Working, or Not Working. Child Safety Locks on rear doors are tested — these prevent children from opening rear doors from inside, and a non-functional child lock is a genuine safety concern for families.

Window Controls and Trim

Power Window Controls are tested through the door — All Working, Some Not Working, or Not Working. A slow or non-functional power window typically has a failing motor or a worn regulator — the cable and track system that moves the glass up and down. Window regulators are one of the more common failure items on high-mileage vehicles. Door Trim Panels are checked as No Visible Fault, Loose, or Damaged. Loose trim panels can indicate previous disassembly for repair or speaker replacement, or they may simply have broken mounting clips.

What Doors Reveal About Accidents

Doors are one of the best places to spot previous accident repair. A door that closes differently from the others — tighter, looser, or with a different sound — may have been replaced or repaired. Mismatched paint between the door and adjacent panels is visible in certain lighting conditions. Different rubber seal types between doors indicate replacement. Our inspectors examine these details as part of the broader body and frame assessment, because door condition often confirms or contradicts what the body panel and frame sections reveal.
