The Mitsubishi Pajero has been an icon in the UAE since the earliest days of desert driving culture. Generations of UAE residents have relied on the Pajero for desert camping, dune bashing, and daily commuting. The Outlander serves a different purpose — a practical family crossover with available all-wheel drive. Both models appear frequently in the used car market, and their inspection requires attention to areas specific to vehicles that may have seen serious off-road use.
Frame Condition: The Foundation Check
The Pajero uses a body-on-frame construction, making frame inspection critical. AutoFay checks the bumper support, bulk head, radiator frame, cross member, left and right front rails, left and right rear rails, chassis, and floor pan. Each is rated from No Visible Fault through Minor Damage, Frame Repaired, Minor Frame Repaired, to Damaged. A Pajero used for desert driving may show frame stress that a city-only vehicle would not. Under body shields and covers are checked — Missing or Damaged shields indicate exposure to off-road conditions.
The front and rear aprons are inspected for dents, repairs, welding, or rust. The firewall is checked. All structural pillars — A, B, and C on both sides — are inspected for damage, repairs, or bending. The trunk floor is assessed for water damage, which can occur when desert-driven vehicles are washed frequently with high-pressure water. Rear bumper support and rear panel condition complete the structural assessment.
4WD System: Super Select and Transfer Case
The Pajero's Super Select 4WD system allows switching between 2WD, full-time 4WD, and locked 4WD modes. AutoFay's drivetrain inspection verifies 4WD/AWD engagement as Working, Delayed, or Not Engaging. The transfer case is checked — Working, Noisy, or Leaking. A transfer case that grinds or refuses to engage low range has internal wear that is expensive to repair.
Front and rear differentials are inspected — Good, Noisy, or Leaking. On the Pajero, the rear differential lock is tested if equipped. Driveshaft condition is rated Good, Vibration, or Damaged. Universal joints are checked for wear and noise — a vibration that increases with speed often traces to a worn universal joint. CV axles, CV boots, and CV joints on the Outlander's AWD system are each individually assessed.
Engine and Cooling: Working Hard in Heat
Pajero models in the UAE commonly feature V6 petrol or turbodiesel engines, while the Outlander uses four-cylinder units. Engine overall condition, sound, mounts, and vibration are assessed. The cooling system receives extra attention on vehicles that have done desert driving — radiator condition (No Visible Fault, Dirty, Damaged, or Leaking), cooling fans, water pump, and all cooling hoses. A radiator clogged with desert sand reduces cooling efficiency significantly.
Engine oil level and condition are checked. Transmission fluid condition is critical on high-mileage Pajeros. The engine air filter is rated Clean, Dirty, or Needs Replacement — desert-driven vehicles accumulate fine sand in the air filter much faster than city-only cars. The air intake system is checked for damage or improper modification.
Suspension: Desert Wear Assessment
Vehicles used for off-road driving show specific suspension wear patterns. Front and rear shocks/struts are rated individually. Leaf springs on applicable Pajero models are checked for sagging or cracking. Ball joints, tie rod ends, and bushings wear faster when exposed to sand and dirt. Sway bar links often need replacement on frequently off-roaded vehicles. The subframe is inspected for rust and damage — desert sand can trap moisture against metal surfaces, accelerating corrosion in unexpected areas.
Steering rack and steering gearbox are checked for leaks, wear, and looseness. Steering play is assessed — Excessive play on a Pajero with high mileage is common but should be documented. Wheel alignment is evaluated through tire wear patterns.
Exterior: Reading the Off-Road History
Body condition tells part of the off-road story. Each panel is individually assessed for dents, scratches, repainting, and repair. Running boards are checked — Good, Damaged, or N/A. Skid plates are inspected — a Pajero with damaged or missing skid plates has likely seen serious off-road use. Tow hitch condition is noted. Rock chips on the front bumper, hood, and lower body panels are consistent with desert driving at speed.
Tires receive per-wheel assessment — manufacturing year, condition, and wear pattern. Desert-driven vehicles often show unusual tire wear from operating on soft surfaces. TPMS sensors and wheel bearing condition are verified.
