Lexus occupies a unique position in the UAE luxury car market. Built on Toyota's engineering foundation with added refinement, Lexus vehicles generally require fewer repairs than their German competitors. But this reliability reputation creates a different risk for buyers — the assumption that a Lexus needs less scrutiny. In reality, every used car benefits from professional inspection, and Lexus models have their own specific areas where wear accumulates.
Engine and Drivetrain: Generally Strong, Not Invincible
AutoFay's engine inspection on Lexus models typically yields favorable results. Engine start and idle is usually rated Normal, and check engine lights are less commonly illuminated than on some European competitors. However, the OBD scanner report still reveals useful information. Stored engine fault codes on higher-mileage Lexus models often relate to oxygen sensor degradation and evaporative emission system codes — neither are critical failures, but they indicate components reaching end of life.
The transmission on most Lexus models earns a Smooth rating during the drivetrain inspection. Transmission fluid condition, however, tells the maintenance story. Lexus vehicles with fluid rated as Good or Acceptable have been serviced properly. Fluid rated as Dirty or with Burnt Smell on a Lexus suggests the owner relied on the car's reputation and skipped transmission service — a common mistake. Even reliable transmissions need fluid changes to remain reliable.
Lexus Hybrid: Additional Inspection Points
Many Lexus models in the UAE are hybrids — RX 450h, ES 300h, LS 500h, and others. The EV and hybrid systems inspection becomes relevant here. High voltage battery health is rated from Excellent through Good, Degraded, to Needs Replacement. Battery state of health percentage is recorded where the vehicle's diagnostics provide it. Lexus hybrid batteries are generally durable, but batteries in UAE-driven vehicles face additional thermal stress from ambient heat.
The hybrid cooling system is checked — rated as Working, Leaking, or Not Working. The hybrid battery has its own cooling system separate from the engine, and a cooling fan that fails silently accelerates battery degradation. Regenerative braking function is verified — weak regenerative braking reduces efficiency and can indicate battery or control module issues. The 12V auxiliary battery is checked separately, as a weak auxiliary battery can prevent the hybrid system from starting even when the main battery is healthy.
Suspension: Comfort-Tuned but Still Wearing
Lexus suspension is tuned for comfort, which means softer bushings and more compliant springs than performance-oriented brands. Front and rear shocks are individually assessed — Lexus shocks typically maintain their function longer than some competitors, but eventually they lose damping capability. Models with adaptive or air suspension (LS, LX) have the air suspension checked specifically. On the LX 570, which shares its platform with the Land Cruiser, suspension wear patterns mirror those found on desert-driven Toyota counterparts.
Steering play is typically minimal on Lexus vehicles, even at higher mileage. When our inspectors find excessive steering play on a Lexus, it usually indicates tie rod end wear from aggressive speed bump encounters rather than general wear — Lexus steering components are designed to last.
Interior: Where Lexus Quality Shows
The interior inspection on Lexus vehicles typically rates well. Dashboard condition, steering wheel condition, and seat condition generally show less wear than comparable-age luxury competitors. Heated and cooled seats are verified — these features work reliably on Lexus, but the cooling function can weaken over time as the seat fan accumulates dust. The infotainment system, while sometimes considered less intuitive than competitors, functions reliably — screen glitches and system crashes are uncommon findings.
Interior smell is rated as Fresh, Normal, Smoke, Musty, or Pet Odor. A Lexus with a musty smell despite a clean interior often indicates a water intrusion — possibly from a sunroof drain that has become clogged, allowing water to enter the headliner area. This is one of the few areas where Lexus models can develop hidden damage.
Body and Frame: Paint Quality and Desert Use
Lexus paint quality is generally excellent, with fewer paint chips and better corrosion resistance than some competitors. The body inspection checks each panel for condition and paint status. Lexus vehicles in the UAE show less frequent repaint than the market average — partly because the paint holds up better and partly because owners tend to be more careful. However, the LX model, used for off-road driving, shows the same desert wear patterns as any other vehicle driven in sand — scratches, rock chips, and underbody damage from terrain.
