Infiniti and Acura: Premium Japanese Inspection

Infiniti and Acura represent the luxury divisions of Nissan and Honda respectively. In the UAE, the Infiniti QX80 is a popular alternative to the Nissan Patrol for buyers seeking a more refined experience, while the Q50 and QX50 serve the sedan and crossover segments. Acura models, though less common in the UAE, appear in the used market through imports. Both brands combine Japanese engineering with premium features, creating vehicles that age differently from their mainstream counterparts.

Infiniti Engines: VQ Legacy and VR Turbo

Infiniti has used several engine families across its lineup. The QX80 uses the 5.6L V8 shared with the Nissan Patrol, while sedans and crossovers have used the VQ-series V6 and newer VR-series turbocharged engines. AutoFay's engine inspection rates overall condition from No Visible Fault through Good, Average, to Needs Attention. Engine sound is checked — the VQ V6 is known for its characteristic sound, but Knocking or Severe Noise indicates problems.

The turbocharger on VR-series engines is checked for noise and leaks. Drive belts are assessed — Good, Worn, Cracked, or Needs Replacement. The timing chain on VQ engines is a known wear item at higher mileages, and chain noise may present as a rattle at cold startup. Engine oil condition is checked — Clean, Dark, Dirty, or Milky. The QX80's V8 is inspected with the same attention given to the Patrol, as they share the same powerplant.

Exhaust smoke is documented. The cooling system is thoroughly checked — radiator condition, cooling fans, water pump, coolant hoses and clamps, and coolant condition. On the QX80, the cooling system works hard given the vehicle's size and weight, especially in UAE summer conditions.

Transmission Varieties: CVT, Automatic, and 4WD

Infiniti models use different transmission types depending on the model. The QX80 features a 7-speed automatic, while smaller models have used CVTs and conventional automatics. AutoFay rates transmission operation as Smooth, Slight Delay, Hard Shifting, or Slipping. CVT-equipped models receive particular attention — transmission fluid condition rated as Burnt Smell or Needs Replacement on a CVT is a serious concern. The QX80's automatic transmission fluid should be Good or Acceptable; anything worse suggests neglected maintenance on a heavy vehicle.

On AWD and 4WD models, the system engagement is verified. The QX80's 4WD system includes a transfer case that is checked for noise and leaks. Front and rear differentials are assessed. Driveshaft, universal joints, CV axles, and CV boots are all inspected individually.

Hydraulic Steering: The Infiniti Difference

Many Infiniti models retained hydraulic power steering longer than competitors, which provides excellent steering feel but creates additional inspection points. The power steering system is rated Working Fine, Heavy, Noisy, or Leaking. Power steering fluid level and condition are checked. A noisy power steering pump on an Infiniti often indicates low fluid from a leak in the rack or hose connections. Steering play is assessed — None, Slight, or Excessive.

The steering rack is checked for leaks, wear, and looseness. On the QX80, the steering gearbox is inspected separately. Wheel alignment is assessed through tire wear patterns. The complete suspension is inspected — shocks, springs, control arms, ball joints, tie rod ends, sway bar links, and bushings. The QX80's hydraulic body motion control system, where equipped, adds complexity that standard suspension does not have.

Luxury Interior and Safety Features

Infiniti interiors emphasize comfort and technology. AutoFay checks the infotainment screen functionality, navigation system, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto compatibility, and all speakers including the Bose audio system. The digital instrument cluster and heads-up display are tested. Heated and cooled seats in front and rear, seat memory functions, lumbar support, and all power seat adjustments are verified.

Safety systems are individually tested — blind spot detection, lane departure warning, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, surround view cameras, front and rear parking sensors, and rear cross-traffic alert. Each is rated Working or Not Working. The airbag system is checked — No Warning, Warning Light On, or Deployed. All seat belts and pretensioners are verified.

Acura-Specific Considerations

Acura models in the UAE used market are typically imports. The SH-AWD (Super Handling All-Wheel Drive) system on applicable models requires drivetrain inspection — the rear differential with torque vectoring capability is checked for noise and leaks. Honda's i-VTEC engines are reliable but still require standard inspection of all engine, fluid, and cooling parameters. Import-specific checks include verifying that the instrument cluster displays in the correct units and that all electrical systems function properly for UAE specifications.
