Ford and Chevrolet: American Cars in UAE Heat

American cars have a loyal following in the UAE. Ford Explorer, Expedition, Mustang, and Chevrolet Tahoe, Suburban, Camaro — these models offer space, power, and value that attract buyers across the Emirates. However, vehicles designed primarily for the North American market encounter specific challenges in UAE conditions. Understanding what to look for during inspection helps buyers distinguish between well-maintained American cars and ones that have suffered from the climate.

Transmission: Heat is the Enemy

AutoFay's drivetrain inspection checks transmission operation — Smooth, Slight Delay, Hard Shifting, or Slipping. Ford and Chevrolet automatic transmissions are generally robust units, but they are sensitive to heat. In UAE summer, transmission fluid temperatures can exceed design parameters during stop-and-go traffic, particularly on larger vehicles like the Expedition and Tahoe that carry significant weight.

Transmission fluid condition tells the heat story. Fluid rated as Good is amber and translucent. Fluid rated as Dirty has darkened from heat cycling. Fluid with Burnt Smell has been overheated — the friction material in the clutch packs has begun to degrade. On a Ford or Chevrolet with a Burnt Smell transmission fluid rating, the transmission has experienced thermal stress that shortens its remaining life. This does not mean immediate failure, but it means the next owner should factor in fluid service and monitoring.

Cooling System: Larger Engines, More Heat

American V6 and V8 engines produce substantial heat, and the cooling system inspection is critical. Radiator condition, cooling fans, water pump, cooling hoses, and coolant leaks are each assessed. On Ford EcoBoost turbocharged engines, the cooling system supports both the engine and the turbo intercooler system — any weakness in cooling affects performance and longevity. The AC compressor is checked under HVAC — it runs at maximum capacity for most of the year in the UAE, and American cars' AC systems are designed for the range of North American climates, not sustained extreme heat.

Coolant condition is particularly revealing. Clean coolant at proper level on a Ford or Chevrolet indicates the owner understood the higher maintenance demands of driving in the UAE. Low or contaminated coolant on a large American engine is a warning sign — these engines have significant thermal mass and can mask developing overheating problems until the damage is already progressing.

Body: Size and Parking Realities

The body, paint, and damage inspection checks every panel individually. American vehicles in the UAE tend to be large — Expedition, Tahoe, and Suburban are among the biggest vehicles on the road. This size means parking damage is common. Front and rear bumper condition frequently shows scratches, dents, or repaint from parking contact. Body panel alignment is checked — on truck-based vehicles like the Tahoe and Expedition, slight misalignment between the tailgate and body can develop from normal use and does not necessarily indicate accident damage.

Corrosion is checked but rarely found on UAE-driven American vehicles. However, imported vehicles from coastal US states can carry underbody corrosion that is invisible from the surface. The frame condition inspection — checking all rails, cross members, and underbody — catches this hidden corrosion that can compromise structural integrity.

Interior: Wear Patterns on Large Cabins

The interior inspection covers seats, dashboard, steering wheel, headliner, and all comfort features. American vehicles offer spacious interiors with extensive features, and each needs verification. Heated and cooled seats are checked — the cooling function is particularly important in the UAE and should rate as Working. Infotainment systems vary significantly by model year — Ford's SYNC system and Chevrolet's MyLink have evolved considerably, and older versions can be laggy or unresponsive.

The rear entertainment system is checked where present — a feature common on Expedition and Suburban models. Rear AC is verified separately, critical for keeping third-row passengers comfortable. Power features including power liftgate, power running boards, and power-folding third-row seats are each tested, as these powered convenience features are failure points that can be expensive to repair on American vehicles.

Drivetrain: 4WD Systems and Axles

Many Ford and Chevrolet SUVs in the UAE have 4WD capability. The transfer case, front and rear differentials, and 4WD engagement are checked. Vehicles used for desert excursions show accelerated wear on these components. The driveshaft is assessed for vibration — a common finding on older American trucks and SUVs that indicates worn universal joints. CV boots and axle seals are inspected for leaks, which allow lubricant loss that leads to accelerated wear of the components they protect.
